Aren’t kids the cutest?

Last night was the annual pre-school Christmas show at the dance studio where I teach ballet to dancers ages two to eleven. This was the first performance of my students for this studio; I was really excited s l a s h nervous. I really wanted them to do a great job so the director and the parents would be happy with me as a teacher. I have taught dance for several years in Dallas to older dancers but that in no way prepared me for this performance which turned out to be an important learning experience for me.

Should seven year olds be applying descriptive labels to others?

I have a question. Please email me to let me know if my fellow student teachers and I reacted correctly by ignoring this comment or what we should have done…for the next time.

For my teaching methods class we go every Monday and Wednesday to a local elementary school here in Salt Lake City to teach second and third graders creative dance. We have done four classes so far. The kids are great and really excited about dance.

When does a lesson learned mean something different?

I have always been a bit of a quick study which isn’t good as I became quite lazy and terribly behaved when I was bored. However, despite my laziness and my horrible tendencies I amazingly have learned a lot over the years. So as I sit here and think back on my lessons from inside the classroom...and from my life...I wonder why.

A Teacher's Power

Sometimes a teacher's seemingly most innocuous commemt will have the greatest impact on a student.

I honestly don’t remember any of my elementary teachers except one. She's not remembered because she taught me anything special, or because she took me aside to help me with my struggles, or helped me fit in and find friends. This teacher wasn't even my homeroom teacher. Ms. Kline taught at the school I went to; a cute little Catholic private school. A very good place for children. It helped me build a great base for my learning, but also, everyone knew everyone else. So during my third grade year all of my teachers knew intimately what was going on when my father began getting sick.
